Answer to Problem 22.65QA

Solution:

The Ksp of Ca10PO46OH2=5.3×10-118.

Explanation of Solution

1) Concept:

Solubility product constant Ksp is the product of the concentration of the ions raised to the power of their stoichiometric coefficients present in a saturated solution of an ionic compound.

The dissociation equation for Ca10PO46OH2 is

Ca10PO46OH2s10Ca2+aq+6PO43-aq+2OH-aq

The dissociation equation for Ca5PO43OH is

Ca5PO43OHs5Ca2+aq+3PO43-(aq)+OH-(aq); Ksp=2.3×10-59

As the ions produced from both are the same, we can compare the Ksp expression and calculate Ksp of Ca10PO46OH2.

2) Given:

Ksp  Ca5PO43OH=2.3×10-59

3) Calculation:

The Ksp expression for Ca10PO46OH2 is

Ksp Ca10PO46OH2=Ca2+10PO43-6OH-2 equation (1)

The Ksp expression for Ca5PO43OH is

Ksp  Ca5PO43OH=Ca2+5PO43-3OH-   equation (2)

Squaring of equation (2) gives,

Ksp  Ca5PO43OH2=Ca2+5PO43-3OH-2

Ksp  Ca5PO43OH2=Ca2+10PO43-6OH-2    equation (3)

The right hand side of equations (1) and (3) is the same. Therefore, we can write,

Ksp Ca10PO46OH2=Ksp  Ca5PO43OH2

Therefore,

Ksp Ca10PO46OH2=2.3×10-592

Ksp Ca10PO46OH2=5.29×10-118

Ksp Ca10PO46OH2=5.3×10-118

Hence, the Ksp of Ca10PO46OH2 is 5.3×10-118.

Conclusion:

We compared the Ksp expression of both Ca10PO46OH2 and Ca5PO43OH and calculated the Ksp of Ca10PO46OH2.
