The reaction of diphenyl ether with SCl2 in presence of Lewis acid AlCl3 represents the Friedel-crafts reaction that is an aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction.

To get the six carbon signals in the product of the given reaction the presence of symmetry is must and this symmetry is achieved when substitution takes place on both rings at ortho position to the oxygen.
