Introduction: The bacterial cell wall is made up of peptidoglycan, which helps the organism to bear stress and its cell shape. The sub-units of peptidoglycan are assembled in a mesh-like structure known as peptidoglycan sacculus. There are two types of sugar derivatives inside the sacculus: N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acid.

The cell wall of the gram-negative bacteria consists of an outer membrane, a layer of peptidoglycan, and a periplasm. The space between the periplasm and the cell wall is known as periplasmic space. The outer membrane consists of lipopolysaccharide, which retains the stain during gram staining.
