A group of enzymes present in the outer membrane of mitochondria functions to catalyze the oxidation of monoamines. These enzymes are collectively known as monoamine oxidase (MAO). The monoamine oxidase inhibitors block or inhibit the actions of the monoamine oxidase enzymes.
