Concept Introduction:

The pentose phosphate pathway is the alternative pathway used to oxidize glucose. It gives the energy in the form of NADPH. NADPH acts as a reducing agent, and that is used in many biosynthesis pathways.

The balanced reaction for the pentose phosphate pathway is as follows:
