Species-Area Relation The number of species of given taxonomic group within a given habitat (often an island) is a function of the area of the habitat. For islands in the West Indies, the formula
Approximates the number S of species of amphibians and reptiles on an island in terms of the island area A in square miles. This is example of species-area relation.
a. Make a table giving the value of S for islands ranging in area from 4000 to 40,000 square miles.
b. Explain in practical terms what S
c. Use functional notation to express the number of species on an island whose area is 8000 square miles, and then calculate that value.
d. Would you expect a graph of S to be concave up or concave down?

- Mosteller Formula for Body Surface Area: Body surface area is an important piece of medical information because it is a factor in temperature regulation as well as some drug level determinations. The Mosteller formula gives one way of estimating body surface area B in square meters. The formula uses the weight w in kilograms and the height h in centimeters. The relation is B=hw60 In this exercise, we consider people who are 190 centimeters tall. a. Write a formula for B as a function of w. b. Make a graph of B versus w. includes weights up to 100 kilograms. c. Is the graph you made in part b concave up or concave down? d. In this part, we consider the effect of weight gain on men who are 190 centimeters tall. Would the weight gain have a greater effect on surface area for a lighter man or for a heavier man?arrow_forwardMortgage Rates The following table is taken from the website of Freddie Mac. Explain in practical terms the meaning of r(2003). b. Use the table to estimate the value of r(2003).arrow_forwardGrade Point Average In many universities students are given grade points for each credit unit according to the following scale: A 4 points B 3 points C 2 points D 1 point F 0 point For example, a grade of A in a 3-unit course earns 43=12 grade points and a grade of B in a 5-unit course earns 35=15 grade points. A students grade point average GPA for these two courses is the total number of grade points earned divided by the number of units; in this case the GPA is (12+15)8=3.375. a Find a formula for the GPA of a student who earns a grade of A in a units of course work, B in b units, C in c units, D in d units and F in f units. b Find the GPA of a student who has earned a grade of A in two 3-unit courses, B in one 4-unit courses and C in three 3-unit courses.arrow_forward
