Our body requires energy to do work and if the body sees that there is a lack of such energy, then the brain signals to have food. For this to happen, there is a hormone known as leptin that signals the brain for food intake and thereby affects the body weight. Hence, it is a cell-signaling hormone that is required for food intake and to maintain body weight. Without leptin, it is noted that there is uncontrolled eating and hence, a gain in body weight.
