JIT purchasing, relevant benefits, relevant costs. (CMA, adapted) The Gibson Corporation is a manufacturing company that uses automatic stamping machines to manufacture garage doors from rolled sheets of raw steel. Gibson’s inventory of raw steel averages $600,000. Juan Sanchez, president of Gibson, and Jane Anderson, Gibson’s controller, are concerned about the costs of carrying inventory. The steel supplier is willing to supply steel in smaller lots at no additional charge. Anderson identifies the following effects of adopting a JIT inventory program to virtually eliminate steel inventory:
- Without scheduling any overtime, lost sales due to stockouts would increase by 700 units per year. However, by incurring overtime premiums of $90,000 per year, the increase in lost sales could be reduced to 300 units per year. This would be the maximum amount of overtime that would be feasible for Gibson.
- Two warehouses currently used for rolled steel storage would no longer be needed. Gibson rents one warehouse from another company under a cancelable leasing arrangement at an annual cost of $80,000. The other warehouse is owned by Gibson and contains 20,000 square feet. Three-fourths of the space in the owned warehouse could be rented for $2.50 per square foot per year. Insurance and property tax costs totaling $16,000 per year would be eliminated.

- 1. Calculate the estimated dollar savings (loss) for the Gibson Corporation that would result in 2017 from the adoption of JIT purchasing.
Required
- 2. Identify and explain other factors that Gibson should consider before deciding whether to adopt JIT purchasing.

- The Seattle Corporation manufactures filing cabinets in two operations: machining and finishing. It provides the following information: E (Click the icon to view the department information.) Each cabinet sells for $105 and has direct material costs of $70 incurred at the start of the machining operation. Seattle has no other variable costs. Seattle can sell whatever output it produces. The following requirements refer only to the preceding data. There is no connection between the requirements. Read the requirements Requirement 1. Seattle is considering using some modern jigs and tools in the finishing operation that would increase annual finishing output by 1,200 units. The annual cost of these jigs and tools is $25,000. Should Seattle acquire these tools? Show your calculations. The quoted external price in industry publications from a supplier near AB is P200 per ton plus transportation. It costs P20 per ton to transport the goods to CD. AB’s actual market cost per ton to buy the direct materials to make the transferred product is P100. Actual per ton direct labor is P50. Other actual costs of storage and handling are P40. The company president selects a P220 transfer price. This is an example of: Cost-based transfer pricing. Cost plus 20% transfer pricing. Market-based transfer pricing. The Compressor Division manufactures compressors for the Fabrication Division, which completes the washing machine and sells it to retailers. The Compressor Division "sells" compressors to the Fabrication Division. The market price for the Fabrication Division to purchase a compressor is $40.00. (Ignore changes in inventory.) The fixed costs for the Compressor Division are assumed to be the same over the range of 5,000-10,000 units.
