Reasons for COBOL allowing identifiers of longer length:
COBOL allows identifiers of longer length while ALGOL and FORTRAN do not because their primary application areas are entirely different.
- ALGOL and FORTRAN are used for scientific computations and mathematical manipulations.
- The length for variable names needed in mathematical calculations is small, one to five or six letters are most commonly used. Not more than that.
- So, essentially these two languages never come across with the requirement of long identifiers.
