Two languages which Pearl was meant to replace:

Perl was a combination of two languages “sh” and “awk” with more added features and hence it replaced these two languages.

• “sh” was the first scripting language which contained a small set of commands. These commands were considered as system calls that performed file filtering or file management. Support for variables, control flow statements and functions made it a complete programming language.
