Chapter 2, Problem 53EAP
A cheetah spots a Thomson’s gazelle, its preferred prey, and leaps into action, quickly accelerating to its top speed of 30 m/s, the highest of any land animal. However, a cheetah can maintain this extreme speed for only 15 s before having to let up. The cheetah is 170 m from the gazelle as it reaches top speed, and the gazelle sees the cheetah at just this instant. With negligible react ion time, the gazelle heads directly away from the cheetah, accelerating at 4.6 m/s2 for 5.0 s, then running at constant speed. Does the gazelle escape? If so, by what distance is the gazelle in from when the cheetah gives up?

Daniel takes his two dogs, Pauli the Pointer and Newton the Newfoundland, out to a field and lets them loose to exercise. Both dogs sprint away in different directions while Daniel stands still. From Daniel's point of view, Newton runs due North at 3.90m/s, but from Pauli's point of view, Newton appears to be moving at 1.50 m/s due East. What must Pauli's velocity relative to Daniel be for this to be true? Express your answer in terms of the ? and ?‑components if North is the +? direction and East is the +? direction.

Pelicans tuck their wings and free-fall straight down when diving for fish. Suppose a pelican starts its dive from a height of 14.0 m and cannot change its path once committed. If it takes a fish 0.20 s to perform evasive action,at what minimum height must it spot the pelican to escape?Assume the fish is at the surface of the water.
A red train traveling at 20 m/s and a green train traveling at 40 m/s are headed toward one another along a straight, level track. When they are 950 m apart, each engineer sees the other's train and applies the breaks. The breaks decelerates each train at the rate of 1 m/s˄2. What is the speed (in m/s) of the green train at impact?

Because the salon must make forward progress in the water, let's assume it can swim to the top if the water speed is 3.00" or less.
