Managed care. The term ‘managed care’ is used to describe to the system of health care with emphasis on managing the cost of health care services and quality of care provided to the patients. The word ‘managed’ has been used to indicate the fact that the process of health care, which comprises of insurance service providers, health care service givers, patients and plan sponsors such as employers are working in a managed and systematic manner to provide the benefit of health care to the individuals who are beneficiaries to the plan. It indicates effective and efficient management of the entire process which provides cost benefits to the sponsors, better services to the patients, more clients to the medical service providers and insurance providers. System of managed care has allowed a larger population of individuals to become a part of the organized system of availing health care via insurance rather than cash-based payments for rapidly increasing health care costs. It has inevitably led to a better quality of life for employees and allowed employers to fulfill the social responsibility and contractual responsibility towards employees in a cost-effective manner, leading to a more productive human resource for the company. Managed care involves creation of an insurance network in which service providers are enlisted as members and plan beneficiaries can select their service provider from enlisted members, resulting in creation of a health care based community within the network.
