Ionic compounds are those which are made of ions. Ions are charged particles produced when atoms gain or lose electrons. It is typically formed when a metal reacts with a non-metal via sharing of electrons. Sodium chloride $\left(\text{NaCl}\right)$ is an example of an ionic compound made up of sodium ions $\left({\text{Na}}^{+}\right)$ and chloride ions $\left({\text{Cl}}^{-}\right)$.
