Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason Rutherford's experiments could overturn Thomson's atomic model is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The entire universe is made up of atoms. Atoms are units which form every matter in the universe. The association of two or more atoms makes molecules. Compounds are made by the chemical association of atoms of different elements. However, atoms are not the smallest indivisible particles. Atoms are composed of much smaller particles namely, protons, electrons, and neutrons. Protons have a positive charge on them. Electrons have a negative charge. Neutrons have no charge in them. Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus in the atoms whereas the electrons revolve around the nucleus.
An atom has an equal number of protons and electrons. The neutrality of atom is thus maintained.
