SCIENTIFIC THINKING A recent experimental study looked at the combined effects of ocean acidification (see Module 2.15) and increased ocean temperatures, both aspects of climate change, on the growth of polyps, juvenile coral animals.
Researchers reported the average polyp biomass (in μg/polyp) after 42 days of growth under four treatments: a control with pH and temperature maintained close to normal reef conditions, a pH lowered by 0.2 units, a temperature raised by 1°C, and a combined lower pH and higher temperature. The results showed that polyp biomass was reduced somewhat in both the low-pH and high-temperature treatments, but the combined treatment resulted in a reduction in growth by almost a third—a statistically significant result. Experiments often look at the effects of changing one variable at a time, while keeping all other variables constant. Explain why this experiment considered two variables—both a higher temperature and a lower pH—at the same time.

- Mono lake is a a soda lake (highly alkaline- pH 10) formed some 700,000 years ago. In your research, you have discovered a novel organism that is about 5x2 um in size. It is an aquatic organism, that appears to thrive in low oxygen tensions and in alkaline conditions, and appear to be chemotactic . It was found in the deeper regions of the lake with higher salinity and no oxygen. You are attempting to classify the organism as a Bacteria, Archaea or Eukarya. For each of these domains, list five (5)characteristics or structures that would allow you to classify the organism as belonging the domains. This is, for each domain, list 5 distinct characteristics or distinct structures that would place the organism in that domain. Be thoughtful, specific and detailed in your answer (by detail, I am referring to the level of detail in the text -- for example, if you believe your organism has flagella, what flagella composition/structure/movement would classify it as Archaea vs Eukarya vs…arrow_forwardSome people have proposed trying to artificially change the chemistry of seawater to make it more alkaline. What problem are they trying to address? Most organisms survive well in a highly alkaline environment, so changing the ocean's chemistry would increase our food supply. Coral reefs require an alkaline environment or they lose their zooxanthellae and become white. The ocean needs to be more alkaline so that the coral reefs can dissolve naturally to repeat the cycle of breakdown and renewal. The ocean has become increasingly acidified as it takes up CO2, harming living organisms such as coral reefs. There are too many fish in the ocean and making it more alkaline would make the numbers more manageable.arrow_forward1.List three “special” characteristics of water that influence living organisms. Then for one of these characteristics explain how it influences aquatic life on earth 2.In hydrological terms what are recharge and residence time? b) What happens if pumping rate from aquifers exceeds recharge rate 3.The attenuation of light in water is dependent on the extinction coefficient (eλ) summed for all wavelengths. What factors contribute to or determine this extinction coefficient?arrow_forward
- What is the effect of water’s viscosity on aquatic organisms? Group of answer choices It increases the buoyancy of organisms, making it easier for them to float It prevents the mixing of different water layers, creating distinct habitats It enhances the rate of photosynthesis in aquatic plants It creates resistance that organisms must overcome to move, affecting their shape and energy expenditurearrow_forwardA well-written research question states the independent and dependent variables in the experiment. For example, a student investigated the effect of soil pH on the number of strawberries produced by a strawberry plant. Her research question was “How does the pH of soil affect the number of strawberries produced by a strawberry plant?arrow_forwardDead organic matter commonly decomposes in a pattern that follows a negative exponential curve. Scientists wanted to compare the decomposition rates of leaves from cherry trees and maple trees. The scientists placed bags of leaves from each type of tree into a stream and retrieved the bags over time. The scientists repeated the experiment three times. The scientists calculated and graphed the mean amount of litter remaining of each leaf type at all time points. When plants decompose, the dead plant matter first leaches substances such as salts, sugars, and amino acids. After this leaching, one compound left behind is lignin. Lignin gives leaves their toughness and resists decomposition. Leaf mass remaining (grams) 1004 75+ 50- 25- O 25 50 75 Time (days) Maple Cherry 100 Select the statement the data support about the rate of leaf decomposition and the amount of lignin present in leaves. O Since the maple leaves decompose the slowest, they have a greater amount of lignin. O Since the…arrow_forward
- 1. What causes ocean warming and acidification? It is caused mainly by carbon dioxide and many marine organisms that produce carbonate shells 2. Why are human activities that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere causing concern? Type answer here. 3. How does the water chemistry charlge as carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in the ocean? Type answer here. 4. What will happen if man continues to release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? Type answer here. 5. What are two economic risks of ocean acidification? Type answer here. 6. Site A had a low nitrate concentration. Site B had a high nitrate concentration. (i) Describe and explain the effect of increased nitrate concentration on algal growth. (ii) Algae do not live long. Explain why the presence of large numbers of algae results in a fall in the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. (iii) There are very few submerged water plants at Site B. Use (iii) the graphs to suggest how placing a speed limit on boats might allow submerged water plants to become re-established at Site B.arrow_forward
