To review:
Evolutionary development in the human populations immune to Plasmodium vivax due to the presence of a mutated enhancer for the glycoprotein present on their red blood corpuscles (RBCs).
Introduction:
A protist named P. vivax is mainly responsible for causing malaria. It gets attached to the RBCs after entering the blood. It has been found that some human populations in Africa are immune to P. vivax due to the absence of this particular glycoprotein on their RBCs. The transcription of this glycoprotein is influenced by the enhancers in a variety of tissues. In individuals immune to this form of malaria, the enhancer that is normally expressed in RBC precursors is mutated.
