Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The simplest formula of the given compounds is to be written.
Concept introduction:
The simplest molecular formula is also known as the empirical formula. It represents the simplest ratio of element present in a compound. The formula is written in the form of element symbol and its mole ratio in its subscript.
(b)
Interpretation:
The structural formula should be drawn for the complex formed.
Concept introduction:
The geometry of any complex is the spatial arrangement of ligands around the central metal cation. The chemical and most of the physical properties of the complex depends on this geometrical arrangement only.
When the same ligands are on the same side around central atom, then the arrangement is ‘cis’ while the same ligands are arranged on opposite side of the central atom shows a “trans” geometry.
The number of ligands attached to the metal cation shows its co-ordination number.
