Molecules can be classified into various types. Diatomic molecule is a type of molecule that contains two atoms. The two atoms may be of same element or different element. Triatomic molecule is a type of molecule that contains three atoms. The three atoms may be from a same element or different element. This series goes on like this as tetraatomic, pentaatomic molecules etc.

Molecules that contains same type of atoms in it has to be an element. Heteroatomic molecule is the one that contains two or more kinds of atoms in a molecule.
