The erythrocyte’s plasma membrane consists of some surface antigens that protrude out of the surface of the erythrocyte. These surface antigens are specific for a specific antibody that determines the blood group type. ABO blood group and Rh proteins are the two types of surface antigens of the erythrocyte.
