To discuss:
The life history of RBCs and the mechanism by which the body disposes of old RBCs.
Introduction:
The body is endowed with mechanisms to detect changes in its internal environment, to antagonize the changes, and to ultimately maintain a fairly constant internal environment. These mechanisms together are termed homeostasis – the maintenance of a constant internal environment.
To maintain a constant RBC number in blood, the body uses a negative feedback mechanism involving detection of a fall in RBC numbers by the kidneys, which release erythropoietin (EPO) to increase RBC numbers.
