Chapter 18, Problem 4CQ
An ideal gas is held in an insulated container at the temperature T. All the gas is initially in one-half of the container, with a partition separating the gas from the other half of the container, which is a vacuum. If the partition ruptures, and the gas expands to fill the entire container, what is its final temperature?

A rigid, perfectly insulated container has a membrane dividing its volume in half. One side contains a gas at an absolute temperature T0 and pressure p0 , while the other half is completely empty. Suddenly a small hole develops in the membrane, allowing the gas to leak out into the other half until it eventually occupies twice its original volume. In terms of T0 and p0 , what will be the new temperature and pressure of the gas when it is distributed equally in both halves of the container? Explain your reasoning.
A rigid tank whose volume is unknown is divided into two parts by a partition. One side of the tank contains an ideal gas at 927°C. The other side is evacuated and has a volume twice the size of the part containing the gas. The partition is now removed and the gas expands to fill the entire tank. Heat is now applied to the gas until the pressure equals the initial pressure. Determine the final temperature of the gas.
A gas chamber is to be designed to separate two gases with the following specifications:
Hot gas temperature
1145°C
Cold gas temperature
45°C
Hot gas heat transfer coefficient
230 W/m² K
Cold gas heat transfer coefficient
290 W/m² K
Metal wall thermal conductivity
115 W/m K
If the maximum temperature of the wall on the hot side does not exceed 545°C,
using thermal resistance concept, what thickness should the metal wall between the hot gas and
cold gas be in mm?
