Introduction:

Basal metabolic rate is defined as the minimum amount of energy required by the body to process its normal functions when the body is at rest. Basal metabolic rate is higher in males as compared to female. With the increase in the age of a person, his BMR decrease. A person who is more physically active will have higher BMR. Pregnant or lactating females have higher BMR. Lower intake of food or fastening condition decreases the BMR.

A person is considered as overweight when the weight of that person is 10 to 20% higher than the normal weight for the given height. A person is considered as an obese when the weight of that person is a 20% or above, higher than that of the normal weight for the given height.
