Concept explainers
Visit this site (http://openstaxcollege.org/l/normallevels) for a list of normal levels established for many of the substances found in a sample of blood. Serum, one of the specimen types included, refers to a sample of plasma after clotting factors have been removed. What types of measurements are given for levels of glucose in the blood?
To describe:
The normal levels of glucose in the blood.
Introduction:
The glucose is a monosaccharide, which plays a very important role in the biological system. It is found in the cells as well as in the blood plasma.
Explanation of Solution
The normal level of the glucose in the blood is 80 mg per decilitre to 120mg per decilitre. The glucose is present in the blood plasma as a solute, it is dissolved in the blood plasma, the enzymes glucagon, and insulin help in the regulation of the blood glucose amount.
Thus, the normal level of the glucose in the blood is 80mg/dL − 120mg/dL.

- An 84 year old male patient has been given a loading dose of digoxin of 298 micrograms in divided doses by intravenous infusion. He has a creatinine clearance (Ccr) of 34 ml / min. What is the maintenance dose (in micrograms) that this patient should receive? Round your answer to the nearest whole number. Use the formula provided to calculate the maintenance dose. Maintenance Dose = Peak body stores x % daily loss 100 Where: Peak Body Stores = Loading Dose % Daily Loss = 14 + Creatinine clearance (Ccr) 5arrow_forwardErthy is given an intravenous antibiotic (gentamicin) at a dose of 7 mg/kg per day for a period of 7 days. This dose will be assessed after a week and adjusted accordingly. The gentamicin will be administered in 87 mL of Normal Saline (NS) over a time period of 20 minutes. Please answer the following questions: a. How much will Erthy be getting per day in mg based on this order?b. How much volume of the gentamicin (in mL) should be added to the IV bag; the concentration of gentamicin is 10 mg per mL.arrow_forwardPlease answer parts a, b and c and show work.arrow_forward
- A 30-year-old female patient with uncontrolled hypertension is suspected by an investi- gating endocrinologist of having Conn's syndrome. (b) What further biochemistry investigations would you undertake? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardHemoglobin molecules exposed to high levels of glucose are converted to glycated products. The glycated product used to measure blood glucose control in diabetics is hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), contained in red blood cells that last around 3 months. In general terms, explain how HbA1C forms and why it is a useful marker for blood glucose control.arrow_forwardA creatinine clearance is done on a patient with the following results: serum creatinine, 0.6 mg/dL; urine creatinine, 102 mg/dL; urine volume, 1650 mL/24 hours; body surface area, 1.93 m2. Based on the information from calculations above, which of the following is the best interpretation of this patient's creatinine clearance results? 1) Within the normal range 2) Above normal, probably because the 24-hr urine collection was not completed correctly 3) Above normal 4) Below normal no references, just homeworkarrow_forward
