Introduction

The primary cause of death in colonial times was infectious diseases. Native Americans had no resistance to European diseases because they lived in less crowded and more sanitary conditions. The introduction of “foreign” antigens led to new illnesses that the Native Americans' bodies were incapable of fighting. The primary causes of death today are related to what people put in their bodies, such as tobacco and sugar.
