Medicalization is viewing conditions in biomedical terms instead of social, cultural or religious in origin. Some sociologists feel that depression is medicalized version of sadness. Another example would be the changing way alcoholism is seen. What was once called a condition of choice for which sufferers were blamed is now considered to have genetic and other causes instead.
