The coolant in an automobile radiator is kept at a pressure higher than
atmospheric pressure. Why is this desirable? The radiator cap will release
coolant when the gauge pressure of the coolant reaches a certain value,
typically 15 lb/in.² or so. Why not just seal the system completely?
In an air heating system, heated air at 40°C and 105 kPa absolute is distributed through a 0.2 m * 0.3 m rectangular duct made of commercial steel at a rate of 0.5 m3/s. Determine the pressure drop and head loss through a 40-m-long section of the duct.
A car tire has an inner radius of 45.46 cm has a low pressure of 195 kPa. The tire is recommended to be inflated to 248 kPa. At the low pressure the tire outer radius is 56.65 cm and fully inflated is 67.81 cm. The outside temperature is 17 0C. What is the mass of the air to inflate the tire? How many air molecules are added to properly inflate the tire?

- 5E. When a mercury-in-glass thermometer is overheated, the top will break off due to the pressure increase from the expansion of mercury which has completed filled the volume of the capillary. A thick, well-tempered glass tube may withstand a maximum pressure of 50 atm without breaking. How far can a thermometer be heated past the temperature at which a capillary is filled before the pressure becomes this large? For mercury, a=1.8x10ª K' and K=3.9x106 atm"'arrow_forwardI've posted the below question earlier, and I received the answer. This is the question: A J-shaped tube is filled with air at 760 Torr and 22 °C. The long arm is closed off at the top and is 100.0 cm long; the short arm is 40.00 cm high. Mercury is poured through a funnel into the open end. When the mercury spills over the top of the short arm, what is the pressure on the trapped air? Let h be the length of mercury in the long arm. I need further explanation of one step: - when P2 is obtained in the short arm, the equation is 40-h+P1 1. How did we get this equation? 2. the short arm does not contain any air, why do we create an equation of P2 in the short arm? Please clarify these concerns. I have received the answer shown in the attached picture but it is not correct.arrow_forwardA bicycle tire has an absolute pressure of 7.30x105 N/m² (~105.9 psi) at a temperature of 21.0°C and contains 2.10 L of gas. - Most automobiles have a coolant reservoir to catch radiator fluid that may overflow when the engine is hot. A radiator is made of copper and is filled to its 14.2 L capacity when at 18.0°C. What volume (in L) of radiator fluid will overflow when the radiator and fluid reach their 95.0°C operating temperature, given that the fluid's volume coefficient of expansion is = 400 x 10-6/°C? Note that this coefficient is approximate, because most car radiators have operating temperatures of greater than 95.0°C. 0.44 X Larrow_forwardIt is recommended that you inflate the tires on your car when they are at ambient temperature. Suppose you inflate the tires to 39 psi gauge with air at T = 22 °C. The tire heats up to 39 °C when you drive. Additionally, because the tire is spinning, it expands due to centripetal effects and the volume of the tire increases by 2%. What is the gauge pressure in the tire now?arrow_forwardMany hot water heating systems have a reservoir tank connected directly to the pipeline, to allow for expansion when the water becomes hot. The heating system of a house has 76 m of a copper pipe whose inside radius is 9.5 x 10^ -3 m. When the water and pipe are heated from 24 Celcius to 78 Celcius, what must be the minimum volume of the reservoir tank to hold the overflow of water?arrow_forward
- To ensure a tight fit. the aluminum rivets used in airplane construction are made slightly larger that the rivet holes and cooled by dry ice before being driven. If the diameter of a hole is 0.500 cm. what should be the diameter of a rivet at 20 degree Celsius if its diameter is equal that of a hole when the rivet is cooled to -78°C, the temperature of dry ice? Assume the coefficient of linear expansion to remain constant.arrow_forwardDuring a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas. If the pipe is insulated and 90 percent of the heat loss is saved, determine the amount of money this facility will save a year as a result of insulating the steam pipes. Assume the plant operates every day of the year for 10 h. State your assumptions.arrow_forwardThe inner tube of a Pyrex glass mercury thermometer has a diameter of 0.110 mm. The bulb at the bottom of the thermometer contains 0.510 cm3 of mercury. How far will the thread of mercury move for an increase of 1.00°C? Remember to take into account the expansion of the glass. Coefficient of Linear Expansion of Glass(Pyrex) is 3.25 x 10-6 K-1 and Coefficient of Volume Expansion of Mercury is 182 × 10-6 K-1. P mm Ругех - Mercury where P= 0.110 mm. mmarrow_forward

This requires a pressure difference of about 4.0 kPa between the air in your lungs and the outside air. What additional pressure difference is required to pull 20°C air through a straw that is 22 cm long and 0.56 cm in diameter?arrow_forwardMost cars have a coolant reservoir to catch radiator fluid that may overflow when the engine is hot. A radiator is made of copper and is filled to its 16.0-L capacity when at 10.0 °C. What volume of radiator fluid will overflow when the radiator and fluid reach a temperature of 95.0 °C, given that the fluid's volume coefficient of expansion is B=400×10/°C? (Your answer will be a conservative estimate, as most car radiators have operating temperatures greater than 95.0 °C). For copper ß = 51×10“ (C°)-'.arrow_forward
