To describe: The experiment that proves the given hypothesis.
Hypothesis: “The female hormone estrogen activates genes controlled by androgen in prostate cancer cells”.
Introduction:
Androgen and estrogen are sex steroid hormones. They control the expression of male and female sexual characters, respectively. They function by binding and activating the intracellular receptors. These receptors act as ligand-dependent–specific transcription factors that stimulate the transcription of specific genes. Androgens are required for the survival of prostate cancer cells. There are certain prostate cancer cells that survive, despite the treatment that inhibits androgens. Both androgen and estrogen are steroid hormones and follow the same pathway for action. So, it can be hypothesized that estrogen activates genes in prostate cancer cells in the absence of androgen.

- Plasma PDGF levels can be a diagnostic marker for severity and progression of breast cancer. The assay data below shows the plasma levels of PDGF in normal individuals, Stage II and Stage IV (More severe). You are treating a patient with breast cancer and assay indicates that their plasma PDGF level 6 fmoles/ 100 uL.Based on this info, in which stages has this patient's cancer progressed? Explain what process this patient's tumor has likely undergone and which cell types you would expect to now be associated with this tumor.arrow_forwardPlease give me an example on what to research!arrow_forwardConsider the estrogen receptor (ER), a cell-cell signaling molecule which can be mutated to caus3 cancer. ER has a very short half life of 30 minutes. Consider a cell that starts out with 20,000 molecules of estrogen receptor at the start of your experiemnt. Ar t=0 you treat the cell. At t=0 you treat the cell with two drugs. 1)alpha-amanitin, a poisonous chemical from mushrooms that inhibits the enzymatic activity of RNA polymerase (this is why you should know your mushrooms) and 2) cycloheximide, a drug that inhibits translation by the ribosome. Under these conditions, how many molecules of ER protein will be present at the following times?arrow_forward
- Another model, the random model, proposes that any cell in a malignant tumor has the potential to form a new tumor. Does the cancer stem cell hypothesis contradict this idea?arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements about cancer is false? (a) oncogenes arise from mutations in proto-oncogenes (b) tumor suppressor genes normally interact with growth-inhibiting factors to block cell division (c) more than 120 cancer-driving genes have been discovered (d) oncogenes were first discovered in mouse models for cancer (e) the development of cancer is usually a multistep process involving both oncogenes and mutated tumor suppressor genesarrow_forwardI need help pleaearrow_forward
- Nonearrow_forwardThere are many compounds that have been advertised to reduce or delay aging. Resveratrol is a compound isolated from red grapes, and can be found in red wine. This compound is thought to have substantial effects in mammals, such as preventing the growth of tumors and reducing age-related diseases. Many studies have shown that resveratrol and its derivatives cause a cell-cycle arrest in S phase and induce apoptosis. A series of cultured cells have been analyzed for DNA content in the presence and absence of these compounds using a flow cytometer. Using the controls cells (dashed line), which of the following histograms better represents the DNA content of cells treated with the compounds? The X-axis shows relative DNA content.arrow_forwardPls help po thankyouarrow_forward
- 19: What are 3 phenotypes of GA, or BR, or ABA, or CK over-producing mutants. 20: Think about a hormone receptor, specifically the structure of the receptor. Describe ONE why a mutation would cause insensitivity to the hormone, AND ONE way it could cause hypersensitivity to the hormone. Explain your answer to each. 22: Not all cells in tissues are the same. They differentiate from stem cells. Describe how ONE cell type acquires cell identity. (Pick any cell in the plant)arrow_forwardThe Bax gene, codes for a cytosolic protein that plays an important role in apoptosis. Growth factor withdrawal stimulates the pro-apoptotic protein Bax. Which of the following are true for the Bax gene? Select all that apply The Bax gene is a proto-oncogene The Bax gene is a tumor suppressor gene In cancer or transformed cells, the Bax gene mutation would be dominant, and a gain of function mutation In cancer or transformed cells, the Bax gene mutation would be recessive, and a loss of function mutationarrow_forward(46) A mutated form of protein p5x is found in patients with squamous cell carcinoma. In vitro studies show that the normal p5x molecule binds to DNA, and neoplastic cells accumulate in the G0 phase of the cell cycle. In contrast, the mutated form of p5x does not bin d to DNA. These finding are most characteristics of which of the following? (A) Growht factor receptors (B) GTP-binding protein (C) Nonreceptor tyrosine kinases (D) Oncogene proteins (E) Tumor suppressor gene proteinsarrow_forward
