Concept Introduction:

Carbohydrates, as name indicates, are hydrates of carbon. The empirical formula of carbohydrates is CnH2Om . Carbohydrates, based on the number of rings in the structure, are classified into monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides. Monosaccharides are the basic unit of carbohydrates that cannot be hydrolysed further to simpler ketones or aldehydes. Disaccharides are the carbohydrates that are composed of two monosaccharide units while polysaccharides are the carbohydrates that give a number of monosaccharide units on hydrolysis.
