Chapter 16.1, Problem 7PP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The atomic symbol for the given isotopes used in nuclear medicine needs to be determined.

  1. Copper-64
  2. Selenium-75
  3. Sodium-24
  4. Nitrogen-15

Concept introduction:

  • Isotopes: The atoms of an element with different mass number or atomic mass are called isotopes. They have same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons. Therefore, it is not necessary that all atoms of a given element contain the same number of neutrons in their nuclei. For example, hydrogen has three isotopes H1, H2,H3 with 0, 1 and 2 neutrons in their nuclei respectively.

The electron of a hydrogen atom is excited to the 4d orbital. Calculate the energy of the emitted photon if the electron were to move to each of the following orbitals: (a) 1s; (b) 2p; (c) 2s; (d) 4s. (e) Suppose the outermost electron of a potassium atom were excited to a 4d orbital and then moved to each of these same orbitals. Describe qualitatively the differences that would be found between the emission spectra of potassium and hydrogen (do not perform calculations). Explain your answer.
