Interpretation:

Calculate the number of ATPs generated from the metabolic oxidation of the four carbons of acetoacetyl-CoA to CO2. Now consider the homolog derived from the oxidation of an odd-numbered carbon chain, namely, propionoacetyl-CoA and calculate the net ATP yield from the oxidation of the five carbons of this compound to CO2.

Concept Introduction:

Acetoacetyl-CoA is involved in the pathway of ketone bodies and is formed from the condensation of two molecules of Acetyl CoA.

Odd carbon fatty acid chain is oxidized through different mechanisms. The five odd carbons moleculeis left i.e.propionoacetyl-CoA after various cycles of β-oxidation. That is oxidized to SuccinylCoA, entering Krebs cycle.
