Concept explainers
Dutch elm disease is caused by a fungus transmitted to elm trees by the elm bark beetle. The female beetle, when she has located an attractive elm tree, releases several pheromones, including multistriatin, below. These pheromones attract male beetles, which bring with them the deadly fungus.
Treating multistriatin with dilute aqueous acid at room temperature leads to the formation of a product,

- The compound p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide, which has the formula CH3OC6H4CNO, reacts with itself to form a dimer—a molecule that consists of two p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide units connected to each other (CH3OC6H4CNO)2. The reaction can be represented as A + A → B or 2 A → B where A represents p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide and B represents the dimer, (CH3OC6H4CNO)2. For the reaction in carbon tetrachloride at 40 °C with an initial concentration of 0.011 M, these data were obtained: Determine the rate law for the reaction. Determine the rate constant. Determine the order of the reaction with respect to A.arrow_forwardConsider the structure of quinine below and identify a suitable analytical technique for its quantitative analysis. - Which of the following is true about fluorescence intensity of the molecule? I Fluorescence is observed in planar molecules and its intensity increase with an increase in the number of aromatic rings II When zinc is added to a hydroxyl quinoline solution the fluorescence intensity increased due to the formation of a complex which increases the rigidity of the molecule. III On increasing the intensity of the incident radiation the fluorescence intensity increases IV On increasing the concentration of the fluorigenic molecule, the fluorescence intensity increases. The sodium salicylate gives a yellow colour and absorbs at 295 nm, which gave an estimated concentration of sodium salicylate of 0.00015 mol dm-³. CO₂H NaOH (aq) CO₂Na OH sodium salicylate Aspirin (a) Explain the formation of sodium salicylate using a curly arrow mechanism. (b) The solution of sodium salicylate was diluted to 50 cm³. How many moles are in the 50 cm³? (c) There were initially 250 cm³ of the original aspirin solution, so the total number of moles of sodium salicylate in the original solution is 250 times that calculated in part (b). Calculate the mass of aspirin in the tablet. (MW of aspirin = 180 gmol-¹).arrow_forward(2) Draw in the electron purning arrows for the reactions below.arrow_forward
- 13C NMR spectroscopy provides valuable information about the environments of a molecule's carbon atoms. Since carbon atoms are often connected to hydrogen atoms, which could split the carbon signal through spin-spin coupling, the coupling between C and H is often "turned off" through the use of broadband decoupling, causing each C signal to appear as a singlet. Draw an isomer of C5H11Cl that would be expected to have four resonances in its 13C NMR spectra.arrow_forwardThere are many organic acids and bases in our cells, and their presence modifies the pH of the fluids inside them. It is useful to be able to assess the pH of solutions of acids and bases and to make inferences from measured values of the pH. A solution of equal concentrations of lactic acid and sodium lactate was found to have pH= 3.08. (a) What are the values of pKa and Ka of lactic acid? (b) What would the pH be if the acid had twice the concentration of the salt?arrow_forwardExplain how carbon is detected qualitatively.arrow_forward
