(a)
Interpretation:
Whether the below reaction is endothermic or exothermic has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
The reaction that exhales energy from surrounding in form of light or heat is termed as exothermic reaction. Endothermic reactions are those that absorb energy from the environment as heat.
(b)
Interpretation:
On addition of
Concept Introduction:
Le Chatelier’s principle states that changes at equilibrium in system respond to reduce the changes and bring back the system to restore its equilibrium under new conditions. According to this principle with increase in concentration of reactants the reaction moves towards forward direction thus this increases the concentration of products. Whereas with increase in concentration of product reaction shifts towards reverse direction. This increases the concentration of reactants.
(c)
Interpretation:
Addition of heat shifts equilibrium in direction that has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (b).

- Suppose a reaction has the equilibrium constant K = 1.3 108. What does the magnitude of this constant tell you about the relative concentrations of products and reactants that will be present once equilibrium is reached? Is this reaction likely to be a good source of the products?arrow_forwardWrite an equation for an equilibrium system that would lead to the following expressions (ac) for K. (a) K=(Pco)2 (PH2)5(PC2H6)(PH2O)2 (b) K=(PNH3)4 (PO2)5(PNO)4 (PH2O)6 (c) K=[ ClO3 ]2 [ Mn2+ ]2(Pcl2)[ MNO4 ]2 [ H+ ]4 ; liquid water is a productarrow_forwardWrite a chemical equation for an equilibrium system that would lead to the following expressions (ad) for K. - During an experiment with the Haber process, a researcher put 1 mol N2 and 1 mol H2 into a reaction vessel to observe the equilibrium formation of ammonia, NH3. N2(g)+3H2(g)2NH3(g) When these reactants come to equilibrium, assume that x mol H2 react. How many moles of ammonia form?arrow_forwardConsider the system 4 NH3(g) + 3 O2(g) ⇌ 2 N2(g) + 6 H20(ℓ) ΔrH° = −1530.4 kJ/mol How will the amount of ammonia at equilibrium be affected by removing O2(g) without changing the total gas volume? adding N2(g) without changing the total gas volume? adding water without changing the total gas volume? expanding the container? increasing the temperature? Which of these changes (i to v) increases the value of K? Which decreases it?arrow_forwardDescribe a nonchemical system that is in equilibrium, and explain how the principles of equilibrium apply to the system.arrow_forward
- 12.103 Methanol, CH3OH, can be produced by the reaction of CO with H2, with the liberation of heat. All species in the reaction are gaseous. What effect will each of the following have on the equilibrium concentration of CO? (a) Pressure is increased, (b) volume of the reaction container is decreased, (c) heat is added, (d) the concentration of CO is increased, (e) some methanol is removed from the container, and (f) H2 is added.arrow_forwardWrite a balanced chemical equation for a totally gaseous equilibrium system that would lead to the following equilibrium constant expression. Keq=[N2]2[H2O]6[NH3]4[O2]3arrow_forwardDescribe a nonchemical system that is not in equilibrium, and explain why equilibrium has not been achieved.arrow_forward
- . What does it mean to say that a state of chemical or physical equilibrium is dynamic?arrow_forwardFor the reactionH2(g)+I2(g)2HI(g), consider two possibilities: (a) you mix 0.5 mole of each reactant. allow the system to come to equilibrium, and then add another mole of H2 and allow the system to reach equilibrium again. or (b) you mix 1.5 moles of H2 and 0.5 mole of I2 and allow the system to reach equilibrium. Will the final equilibrium mixture be different for the two procedures? Explain.arrow_forwardWhen a mixture of hydrogen and bromine is maintained at normal atmospheric pressure and heated above 200. °C in a closed container, the hydrogen and bromine react to form hydrogen bromide and a gas-phase equilibrium is established. Write a balanced chemical equation for the equilibrium reaction. Use bond enthalpies from Table 6.2 ( Sec. 6-6b) to estimate the enthalpy change for the reaction. Based on your answers to parts (a) and (b), which is more important in determining the position of this equilibrium, the entropy effect or the energy effect? In which direction will the equilibrium shift as the temperature increases above 200. °C? Explain. Suppose that the pressure were increased to triple its initial value. In which direction would the equilibrium shift? Why is the equilibrium not established at room temperature?arrow_forward
