Concept introduction:

The appearance of a $\text{M+2}$ peak may indicate the presence of one of sulfur, bromine, or chlorine elements. We can identify which of these elements is present by the intensity of the $\text{M+2}$ peak relative to that of the ${\text{M}}^{\text{+}}$ peak. The ratio of the intensities at ${\text{M}}^{\text{+}}$ and $\text{M+2}$ peak is calculated, and it is matched with the relative abundance values of Cl, Br, and S atom.
