How ANS function changes with age, and the effects of ANS aging on functioning and quality of life.
Introduction:
The ANS (autonomic nervous system) comprises of efferent nerves that control the cardiac muscle, smooth muscles, and exocrine glands. It is divided into two sub-systems depending on the level at which nerves leave the CNS (central nervous system). The sympathetic nervous system comprises of autonomic nerves from thoracic and lumbar parts of the spinal cord while the parasympathetic nervous system consists of the nerves from the lower brainstem and sacral cord. Although the classification is anatomically based, there are various physical, functional, and biochemical variations between the two systems.
