Chapter 15.1, Problem 3EQ
Summary Introduction
To describe: The differences between results with 2 hour exposed donor oocytes and 12 hour exposed donor oocytes.
Introduction: Yoshio Masui and Clement Markert studied the effect of progesterone on frog oocytes. Oocytes are the cells that on maturity turn into egg cells. Progesterone is the hormone produced by female frogs during mating season. These researchers considered progesterone as a signaling molecule that affects the functions as well as the amount of proteins which guides the advancement of frog oocytes from G2 to the initiation of the M phase

Using the diagram from the Cell Cycle lesson,
we can practice calculating a mitotic index.
1. Count the number of cells that are in ANY
stage of mitosis (PMAT).
2. Count the total number of cells.
3. Use the Mitotic Index formula to calculate
the mitotic index for this sample.

- Question: How many chromosomes were present before mitosis? How many chromosomes did each of the daughter cells contain after mitosis? Cite an example of a type of cell that undergoes mitosis. Why is it important for each daughter cell to contain information identical to the parent cell? Human skin cells divide at a higher rate than neurons (nerve cells). Hypothesize why this may be. Hypothesize what would happen if the sister chromatids did not split equally during anaphase of mitosis.arrow_forwardlook at the screenshot pleasearrow_forwardSCS 20-21_SCI_BIO_CFA2 Brewer, Elise 10 of 24 6. - Which statements are true? Explain why or why not.1 Since there are about 1013 cells in an adult human, and about 1010 cells die and are replaced each day, webecome new people every three years.2 In order for proliferating cells to maintain a rela-tively constant size, the length of the cell cycle must matchthe time it takes for the cell to double in size.3 While other proteins come and go during thecell cycle, the proteins of the origin recognition complexremain bound to the DNA throughout.4 Chromosomes are positioned on the metaphaseplate by equal and opposite forces that pull them towardthe two poles of the spindle.5 Meiosis segregates the paternal homologs intosperm and the maternal homologs into eggs.6 If we could turn on telomerase activity in all ourcells, we could prevent aging.arrow_forwardPlease give me an example on what to research!arrow_forwardDefine Explain the role of CDK inhibitors.
