Concept Introduction:
When dissolved in water, amines behave as weak bases, accept a proton from the water molecule and create ammonium ions. The lone pair (non-bonding) of electrons from the nitrogen atom abstracts the proton from a water molecule to form the alkylammonium ions and leaving hydroxyl ions in the solution, thereby making it basic.
