The sympathetic as well as the parasympathetic nervous system are classified as the divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The nerves of the ANS innervate the visceral organs and help in supporting and enhancing either the flight-or-fight response or the rest and routine body activities, depending upon the situation.
