Concept introduction:
Fossils are the remains of the pre-historic animals or plants buried under the earth. Coal is known as fossil fuel because they were formed by the decomposition of the remains of the pre-historic plants and animals buried under the earth. Coal is a complex mixture of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen compounds and some free carbon. Minute amounts of sulfur and nitrogen compounds are also present in coal. Petroleum is dark colored viscous and foul smelling crude oil which is a complex mixture of several solids, liquids and gaseous hydrocarbon mixed with water, salt and earth particles.
