Chapter 15, Problem 15.16YT
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Arrows are to be added to illustrate the motion of the symmetric N-H stretch. The motion of the asymmetric N-H stretch in the molecule is also to be illustrated.

Concept introduction:

N-H stretches appear between 3300 and 3500 cm-1. Hydrogen bonding involving N-H bonds usually causes these bands to be moderately broad. The intensity of an N-H stretch is usually less than that of an O-H stretch. An N-H absorption band is usually not as broad as an O-H one. The number of N-H peaks that appear can be used to distinguish between various types of amines or amides. A primary amine (RNH2) or amide (RCONH2) exhibits two separate (but closely spaced) N-H stretching bands. A secondary amine (R2NH) or amide (RCONHR) exhibits one N-H stretching band. A tertiary amine (R3N) or amide (RCONR2) exhibits no N-H stretching bands.
