Chapter 15, Problem 15.15P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Manner micropipette H+ ion-selective electrode works has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Ion-selective electrode as the name suggests are intended to be selective to activity of certain ion only. Liquid- ion-selective electrode is composed of hydrophobic ion-selective membrane that is essentially an organic polymer. This thin membrane is filled with viscous ion exchanger solution. The purpose of this solution is to selectively bond the analyte ion. The electrode systems also include two reference electrodes that are often silver silver-chloride electrode.

Principle the leads to voltage measurement by Liquid- ion-selective electrode is that when activity of analyte ion varies voltage across reference electrodes chosen also varies. A calibration curve then determines concentration of analyte at certain voltage.
