Given information:

Polynomial $(-2x^2-x+1)+(-x^2-3x)$

Opening brackets,

  $-2x^2-x+1-x^2-3x$

Here, -2 $x^2$ and - $x^2$ is represented by 2 and 1 red tiles respectively, - $x$ and -3 $x$ is represented by 1 and 3 red tiles respectively. 1 is represented by yellow tile.

  

    -2 $x^2$      - x      1        $x^2$        - 3x

On solving, -2 $x^2$ and - $x^2$ add, - 3x and - x add, resulting

  

          -3 $x^2$            - 4x      1

Result is -3 $x^2$ - 4x+ 1
