Concept introduction: Mitochondria are the energy-converting cell organelles that produce ATP by food molecules in the form of chemical energy in a process known as oxidative phosphorylation. The carbohydrates and fats are fed into citric acid cycle to generate electrons that convert NAD⁺ to NADH. Electrons flow through protein-bound electron carriers from one complex to next in the respiratory chain.  In the last complex, they combine with molecular oxygen to produce water and release energy forms electrochemical proton gradient across inner mitochondrial membrane. The energy in this gradient is converted to ATP by ATP synthase.
