Introduction

Sternberg's triangular model of love is based on three equally important components: passion, commitment, and intimacy. According to Sternberg, the strongest form of love is consummate love. Consummate love combines all three aspects into a complete and ideal package. Like many ideals, this can be difficult to find. More often, two aspects combine to form a somewhat different form of love. For instance, companionate love is formed when there is intimacy and commitment, but a lack of passion. On the other hand, a relationship may have intimacy and passion, but lacks commitment. Sternberg calls this romantic love.
