Chapter 14, Problem 35SAE
Summary Introduction

To review:

The tragic effects of excessive fat metabolism for energy production and the two conditions leading to such results.

Introduction:

Fats are the richest sources of energy and provide high chemical energy on oxidation. The rigorous oxidation of fats releases large amounts of energy, but this process also produces some intermediate undesired products. These undesired by-products are formed as a result of incomplete fat oxidation. The increase in the concentration of these by-products has deleterious effects on the organism.

During anaerobic conditions, lactate travels from the muscle to the liver via the bloodstream. What is lactate converted into when it reaches the liver before it returns back to the muscle? Glucagon Citrate Acetyl CoA Glycogen Glucose
Brown fat is a specialized form of fat that has high levels of mitochondria that contain uncoupling proteins. What does this allow? A) The preferential metabolism of fat. OB) Large amounts of ATP production. C) Generation of heat. OD) Extra glycogen storage capacity.
Lactose intolerance is caused by reduced production of the enzyme lactase.  A variety of digestive system problems, such as celiac disease and Crohn’s disease) can also lower the production of lactase.  If an individual produces low levels of the enzyme lactase, explain why they might be able to tolerate eating dairy products that contain lower levels of lactose (e.g., hard cheeses, feta cheese, and cottage cheese), but will not be able to tolerate foods with high levels of lactose (e.g., milk).
