Answer to Problem 14.96AP

Solution

The composition mixture when equilibrium reestablished is the concentration of NO is 2.055M_ , the concentration of SO3 is 0.655M_ , the concentration of NO2 is 0.045M_ and the concentration of SO2 is 0.800M_ .

Explanation of Solution

Explanation

Given

The balanced chemical equation is,

NO2(g)+SO2(g)NO(g)+SO3(g)

The equilibrium concentration of NO2 is 0.100M .

The equilibrium concentration of SO2 is 0.300M .

The equilibrium concentration of NO is 2.00M .

The equilibrium concentration of SO3 is 0.600M .

The concentration of SO2 after extra addition is 0.800M .

The equilibrium constant is calculated by the formula,

Kc=[NO][SO3][NO2][SO2] (1)

Where,

  • [NO] is the equilibrium concentration of NO .
  • [SO3] is the equilibrium concentration of SO3 .
  • [NO2] is the equilibrium concentration of NO2 .
  • [SO2] is the equilibrium concentration of SO2 .

Substitute the equilibrium concentrations of NO , SO3 , NO2 , SO2 in equation (1).

Kc=[2.00][0.600][0.100][0.300]=1.20.03=40

Consider the following table showing the values of concentration at initial and at equilibrium stage after addition of extra SO2 ,

NO2(g)+SO2(g)NO(g)+SO3(g)Initial0.1000.3002.000.600Equilibrium0.100x0.8002.00+x0.600+x (2)

Where,

  • x is the change in concentration occurred during the reaction.

Substitute the values of concentration of NO , SO3 , NO2 SO2 at equilibrium and equilibrium constant  in equation (1).

40=(2.00+x)(0.600+x)(0.100x)(0.800)x2+34.6x2=0

Solve this quadratic equation by the formula,

x=b±b24ac2a

Where,

  • a is the coefficient of x2 .
  • b is the coefficient of x .
  • c is the coefficient of 1 .

Substitute the values of a , b and c in the above formula.

x=(34.6)±(34.6)24×1×(2)2×1=34.6±34.712=0.112=0.055

The value if x is 0.055 .

Substitute the value of x   in equation (2).

The equilibrium concentration of NO is =2.00+x=2.000.055=2.055M_

The equilibrium concentration of SO3 is =0.600x=0.6000.055=0.655M_

The equilibrium concentration of NO2 is =0.100x=0.1000.055=0.045M_

Therefore, the equilibrium concentration of NO is 2.055M_ , the equilibrium concentration of SO3 is 0.655M_ , the equilibrium concentration of NO2 is 0.045M_ and the equilibrium concentration of SO2 is 0.800M_ .

Conclusion

The composition mixture when equilibrium reestablished is the concentration of NO is 2.055M_ , the concentration of SO3 is 0.655M_ , the concentration of NO2 is 0.045M_ and the concentration of SO2 is 0.800M_ .
