Concept Introduction:

Alcohols are the compounds that contain hydroxyl group in their structure.  Alcohols undergo substitution reaction.

The primary and secondary alcohol undergoes substitution reaction via SN2 process.  The carbocation that is formed is very much unstable.  Hence, the hydroxyl group is protonated and converted to a better leaving group.

Tertiary alcohol also undergoes substitution reaction.  The process which is followed by tertiary alcohol is SN1 process.  In the SN1 process, the first step is to protonate the hydroxyl group and converting it into a better leaving group.
