A study reported in The Accounting Review examined the separate and joint effects of two levels of time pressure (low and moderate) and three levels of knowledge (naive, declarative, and procedural) on key word selection behavior in tax research. Subjects were given a tax case containing a set of facts, a tax issue, and a key word index consisting of 1336 key words. They were asked to select the key words they believed would refer them to a tax authority relevant to resolving the tax case. Prior to the experiment, a group of tax experts determined that the text contained 19 relevant key words. Subjects in the naive group had little or no declarative or procedural knowledge, subjects in the declarative group had significant declarative knowledge but little or no procedural knowledge, and subjects in the procedural group had significant declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge. Declarative knowledge consists of knowledge of both the applicable tax rules and the technical terms used to describe such rules. Procedural knowledge is knowledge of the rules that guide the tax researcher’s search for relevant key words. Subjects in the low time pressure situation were told they had 25 minutes to complete the problem, an amount of time which should be “more than adequate” to complete the case: subjects in the moderate time pressure situation were told they would have “only” 11 minutes to complete the case. Suppose 25 subjects were selected for each of the six treatment combinations and the sample

Use the ANOVA procedure to test for any significant differences due to time pressure, knowledge, and interaction. Use a .05 level of significance. Assume that the total sum of squares for this experiment is 327.50.

Inspection records were reviewed for 628 units of a particular product, and the number of units which passed and failed inspection was determined based on three inspector experience levels. The results are shown in the following table. Experience Level Medium (2-8 years) 285 High (> 8 years) 102 26 Low (< 2 years) 153 16 Decision Pass Fail 46 a. Select the competing hypotheses to determine whether the inspector pass/fail decision depends on experience level. - The operations manager of a company that manufactures tires wants to determine whether there are any differences in the quality of workmanship among the three daily shifts. She randomly selects 499 tires and carefully inspects them. Each tire is either classified as perfect, satisfactory, or defective, and the shift that produced it is also recorded. The two categorical variables of interest are: shift and condition of the tire produced. The data can be summarized by the accompanying two-way table. The study found that in a group of women living near a high-hazard dump site while pregnant there were 181 low birth weight children and 4268 normal birth weight children. Corresponding numbers for women living near a low-hazard dump site were 126 and 4236, respectively. a. Formulate the null and alternative hypotheses. b. - A study investigated the relationship between audit delay and variables that describe the client and the auditor. The file Audit contains data from a sample of 40 companies on the following set of variables: Delay: The length of time from a company's fiscal year-end to the date of the auditor's report. Industry: A dummy variable coded 1 if the firm was an industrial company or 0 if the firm was a bank, savings and loan, or insurance company. Public: A dummy variable coded 1 if the company was traded on an organized exchange or over the counter; otherwise coded 0. Quality: A measure of overall quality of internal controls, as judged by the auditor, on a five-point scale ranging from "virtually none" (1) to "excellent" (5). Finished: A measure ranging from 1 to 4, as judged by the auditor, where 1 indicates "all work performed subsequent to year-end" and indicates 4 "most work performed prior to year-end."
