Concept explainers
The Chemeo Company uses a highly toxic chemical in one of its manufacturing processes. It must have the product delivered by special cargo trucks designed for safe shipment of chemicals. As such, ordering (and delivery) costs are relatively high, at $3600 per order. The chemical product is packaged in 1-gallon plastic containers. The cost of holding the chemical in storage is $50 per gallon per year. The annual demand for the chemical, which is constant over time, is 7000 gallons per year. The lead time from time of order placement until receipt is 10 days. The company operates 310 working days per year. Compute the optimal order quantity, total minimum inventory cost, and the reorder point.

Fisk anticipates sales of 58,800 units per year, an ordering cost of $4 per order, and carrying costs of $1.50 per unit. An American distributor stops by every four weeks to take orders. Because the orders are shipped directly from Italy, they take three weeks to arrive. Charlie's Pizza uses an average of 180 pounds of pepperoni each week, with a standard deviation of 28 pounds. Charlie's prides itself on offering only the best-quality ingredients and a high level of service, so it wants to ensure a 98 percent probability of not stocking out on pepperoni. Assume that the sales representative just walked in the door and there are currently 450 pounds of pepperoni in the walk-in cooler. How many pounds of pepperoni would you order? Use Excel's NORM.S.INV() function to find the z value. Do not round intermediate calculations.arrow_forward

The cost of keeping the chemical storage includes both the cost of the special security precautions in the storage space and borrowing money on short-term loans to pay for the purchase; this works out to about $10 per gallon per year. Ordering costs, which include cost of special transportation, work out to $200 per order. The chemical is bought at $45 per gallon.
