Program Plan Intro

Retrieving the selected item:

• The user can retrieve the selected item either by “getSelectedValue” method or “getSelectedIndex” method.
• The “getSelectedValue” method is used to return a reference to the item that is currently selected.
• The “getSelectedIndex” method is used to determine which item in a list is currently selected.

Example:

The example for “getSelectedIndex” method:

//create an array "fruit" and add the items

String[] fruit = {"Apple", "Orange", "Bananas", "Grape"};

//create a " JComboBox " named "fruitList".

JComboBox fruitList = new JComboBox (fruit);

//declare the integer variable

int x;

//determine the item in a list

x = fruitList.getSelectedIndex ();

• Initially declare an array “fruit” and add the items to the list.
• The “fruitList” is a “JComboBox” object and pass an array of “String” objects to the “JComboBox” constructor.
• Declare the “x” variable and determine the item in a list by calling “getSelectedIndex” method.
