Concept explainers
The sun exerts almost 200 times more force on the oceans of Earth than the moon does. Why then, is the moon more effective in raising tides?
To Explain: Moon is more effective in rising tides than the Sun, although the sun exerts 200 times more force than the moon on the oceans of the Earth.
Explanation of Solution
Tides are due to the difference in force.
Earth sun distance is very much greater than the Earth moon distance.
Point A is nearer than B for sun, so force on A due to sun is greater, similarly force on B is greater than on A due to moon.
The difference of force at the points A and B due to sun on Earth surface is less than the force difference at the points B and A due to the moon.
For this greater force difference between near parts and far parts on the Earth surface due to moon than due to sun, moon is more effective for rising of tides.
